An Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) is a motorized, autonomous, or teleoperated vehicle that operates without an onboard human presence. Engineered to replace or augment human capabilities in hazardous, austere, or physically demanding environments, UGVs rely on a complex integration of drive-by-wire chassis systems, multi-sensor perception, and intelligent control algorithms. They are the cornerstone of modern ground-based automation, serving critical roles across defense, security, and specialized industrial sectors.

What is UGV Classifications & Typical Application Scenarios?

UGVs are highly versatile and can be categorized by their mobility mechanisms (wheeled vs. tracked) and payload capacities.

  • Light/Tactical UGVs (Max payload weight < 200Kg): Agile platforms used for advanced reconnaissance, explosive ordnance disposal (EOD), and narrow-space infiltration.

 

  • Medium Transport UGVs (200Kg ≤ Max payload weight ≤ 600Kg): Robust platforms designed to carry heavy payloads over harsh terrain. Typical applications include transport teams under extreme conditions and mobile airports for Drones/UAVs. This type of UGVs has the highest demand globally and is known as the "golden range" for UGV payload capacity, but high-performance medium UGVs that can accompany as trustful "Overland Robotic Teammate" are very scarce.

     

  • Specialized/Industrial UGVs: Customized platforms adapted for specific civilian or dual-use tasks, such as smart agriculture , CBRNe (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosives) inspection at hazardous plants , and serving as communication hubs at disaster sites.
